Once a common sight in gardens and on roads, hedgehog numbers have plummeted most dramatically in the last decade. Researchers have been trying a number of different monitoring techniques over the years to find out more about their decline and how to help. However many traditional surveying methods do not pick up all hedgehogs where they are known to live and conservation efforts are therefore being hampered.

A new tracking tunnel technique is being trialed by volunteers nationwide with the hope of producing more accurate results. These plastic tunnels are baited with hedgehog treats and contain non-toxic ink pads which the hedgehogs walk over, leaving footprints on paper sheets at the other end of the tunnel. It is hoped this cheap and safe way of locating hedgehogs will give up to date information on hedgehogs, vital in the campaign to saving the species.
