Human-wildlife conflicts increase as people expand their activities into wildlife habitats. One form of such conflict is between orangutans and people. Critically endangered Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelli) are sometimes caught red-handed crop raiding in the farmlands of northern Sumatra and the resulting skirmishes with the crop owners often end in orangutan deaths.

A project funded by PTES is helping to conserve orangutans in the wild by conducting the first detailed study of Human Orangutan Conflict. The research team is examining local peoples’ perceptions of crop-raiding orangutans and the conflict it causes, investigating their attitudes towards orangutan conservation in general, and establishing effective working strategies for people and orangutans to live alongside each other more happily and sustainably.
