bury buckets 4 beetles activity

In 2005 we launched a project called Bury Buckets 4 Beetles, or BB4B.

With the Great Stag Hunt surveys we are able to monitor the adult beetles but because the greatest part of their life cycle is spent underground as a larva it is just as important to monitor the larvae. BB4B is a pilot project and is a great way for everyone to get involved in conserving this species. It involves creating an artificial egg-laying site for female stag beetles in your garden or any green space.

how to take part

All you need to do is drill holes in an ordinary DIY bucket, fill it with a mixture of wood chippings and soil and bury it somewhere that it won’t be disturbed. For full project details and to register your bucket please download instructions here. If you have already buried and registered a bucket and are digging it up to see if you can find any beetles or larvae you can download a reporting form here.
